Scaling up a pig farm and introducing a contract pig-rearing model
Project goal, tasks and budget
Goal: Increase the productivity and efficiency of Ukrainian pig farming by modernising production processes and introducing a contract pig-rearing model.
Objective: Expand the sow herd from 450 to 550 head, integrate an automated feeding system to improve efficiency, involve MSMEs in contract piglet rearing, and create a demonstration farm to train new partners.
Budget: UAH 8,769,193, of which UAH 5,690,558 is financed through the USAID AGRO agricultural support programme and UAH 3,078,634 is the company’s own contribution.
Solution
A modernisation project was developed and an application submitted for financing through the USAID AGRO agricultural support programme, “Supporting the development of Ukrainian pig farming through a contract and/or cooperative rearing model”. An automatic feeding system was introduced to optimise processes, the partner network of MSMEs for piglet fattening was expanded, and a training and advisory centre was created to support new partners.
Result
Financing was secured, increasing piglet production from 10,000 to 14,400 head per year, creating up to 20 new jobs and improving the farm’s competitiveness, ensuring sustainable development of the pig-farming sector.
